2021 Lexus IS teases just its taillights one week ahead of debut
It’s uncertain whether the car will get a new platform and engine or stick with the old
Lexus early June teased the 2021 IS with a photo that shows almost nothing of the car, just the taillight signature, but promises the sedan will be “dressed to thrill.”
Most teasers offer something more than just an outline of the taillamps for us to go on, but Lexus decided to take the most minimalist approach possible.
As is the trend with vehicles nowadays, you can expect full-width rear taillights to be present on the IS. Where we really want to see some new styling is in the grille, but it’s unlikely we’ll get what we want in that department.
Lexus recently discontinued the GS, which means the IS will likely be given a few upgrades to fill the gap. A more luxurious interior, as well as more tech, means the IS could one-up its number one competitor, the BMW 3 Series.
There are conflicting reports on whether or not the vehicle would stay on its old platform; or completely update to the Toyota New Global Platform. That decision might weigh on the engine choice: if Lexus chooses to carry over the old engine, the platform will likely stay the same as well.
The V8 could also be dropped in favour of the twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 from the LS 500, producing 416 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft. of torque. If a V8 does make its way into the 2021 IS, it’s unclear if it will be the a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre; or a new twin-turbo unit that will make its way to the LC race car.
The 2021 Lexus IS is set to debut on June 9, where we’ll get a better look at more than just the taillights.
