Acura MDX and new compact sedan to feature Type S variants: report
Word is the brand’s taking the performance trim across quite a bit of its range
Acura recently revived the vaunted “Type S” trim for its 2021 TLX, and will reportedly also stick the performance badge onto a couple of its other upcomong vehicles.
According to a video of an alleged dealership briefing, Acura teased that Type S variants could be coming for the MDX as well as a new compact sedan. The video was posted to the Acurazine forum, but was taken down shortly after.
The video didn’t provide any other type of information regarding the vehicles, so we’re left to guess things like powertrain and release date. The MDX Type S will be based on a redesigned MDX, due to be unveiled in 2021. The new compact sedan will be unveiled less than 12 months after that.
As for the powertrain, the new TLX Type S uses a brand-new 3.0-litre turbocharged V6, with horsepower figures that Acura has decided to keep a secret. We’re expecting that same V6 to make its way to the MDX Type S variant, but perhaps sporting a hybrid configuration of some sort.
The new compact sedan could potentially be a counterpart to the redesigned Honda Civic, and carry a Type S variant to be sold alongside Honda’s Type R. We don’t expect the V6 powertrain to make its way to the compact sedan, but probably some form of turbocharged four-cylinder that will be shared with the Civic.
